چکیده

The objective of this study is to investigate the consistency of “suburban” population densities and land covers. We analyzed population density, extracted from the census, and vegetation abundance, derived from Landsat imagery, taking six cities in the U.S.A. as contrasting examples. Combining population density and areal vegetation abundance estimates yields univariate and bivariate distributions for the two variables. We quantify the relationship between population density and vegetation fraction in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix and Seattle. A bimodal distribution of population density in the U.S.A. suggests that it may be possible to characterize “suburban” areas on the basis of population density between 100 and 10,000 people/km2. The maximum areal vegetation cover diminishes linearly with the Log10 of population density in cities with large density ranges. Vegetation and Population Density in Urban and Suburban Areas in the U.s.a

Reflectance characteristics of human settlements influence energy fluxes in the physical environment as well as our ability to monitor urban growth with satellite-based sensors. Spectral heterogeneity at the scales of 10 to 30 meters complicate the traditional land cover classifications derived from moderate resolution satellite imagery in urban and suburban areas. In this study we consider pop...

Agronomic performance of two intercropped soybean cultivars

Broader environmental tolerance associated with mixed population of soybean (Glycine max Merr.) cultivars may increase soybean yield potential and play a significant role in yield stability. A field study was carried out to assess whether intercropping of two commonly used cultivars of soybean with different morphological characteristics may increase seed yield in Iran. A split-plot design was ...

The Role of Local Settlements in Combating Desertification of Isfahan's Desert Rangelands

Undoubtedly, land degradation linked to desertification causes a decrease in qualitative and quantitative features of natural resources. This research aimed to assess land desertification by local residents and their role in controlling desertification in Isfahan province, Iran in 2016. The criteria were soil climate, vegetation, erosion, and demography. The indicators of soil texture, stone fr...

Agricultural Abandonment, Suburban Growth, and Forest Expansion in Puerto Rico between 1991 and 2000

The response of local economies to the globalization process can have a large effect on population and land-use dynamics. In countries with a high population density and relatively high levels of education, the globalization process has resulted in a shift in the local economy from agriculture to manufacturing, technology, and service sectors. This shift in the economy has impacted land-use dyn...

Using satellite data to monitor land-use land-cover change in North-eastern Latvia

Land-use and land-cover change (LULCC), especially those caused by human activities, is one of the most important components of global environmental change (Jessen 3(rd) edition: 1-526 2005). In this study the effects of geographic and demographic factors on LULCC are analyzed in northeastern Latvia using official estimates from census and vital statistics data, and using remotely sensed satell...
